Hiking Devon England will take in a variety of superb scenery, from the bleak romantic wilds of
Exmoor, and its wild ponies, and Dartmoor to stately homes such as Clevedon Court (the 1320 home
of Sir John de Clevedon), and the 700 year-old Buckland Abbey nr. Yelverton above the River Tavy.
Devon has a rich mining history and for those interested in steam engines, there is the superb working Levant Steam Engine high on the cliffs at Trewellard, just north of St. Just.

Hiking Devon England, one of England's most beautiful counties.
While hiking Devon England, be sure to visit Exmoor. Situated in the south-west of the UK, straddling the borders of Devon and Somerset, it is home to one of the last herds of wild ponies whose characteristics have changed little in 12,000 years.
They originally came over from the continental land mass and were stranded here when the English Channel was formed, about 6,000 years ago. Due to Man's hunting & changing habitats, these ponies became isolated in about 9 pockets in the British Isles, one of them being on Exmoor.
Various attempts have been made to "tinker" with the breed, which only resulted in dilution of their capacity to withstand the harsh winters; the original stock survived while the inter-bred variety did not! A hardy breed, they are capable of withstanding the harshest of winters that Exmoor can throw at them!
